Did you know that 50% of women in their childbearing years experience painful menstrual cramps and that 15% of Canadian women cannot perform their normal daily activities for one to three days per month as a result? Menstrual cramps are more common in women who have a family member that has experienced the problem in the past, in women who smoke cigarettes, in lighter women compared to heavier women, and in women who have heavier menstrual periods.
If you have bothersome menstrual cramps that you have not been able to control, you should see your Rexall Pharmacist. They will assess your condition to ensure that you do not have any signs and symptoms that would be better treated by a doctor or other health professional. In addition to recommending or prescribing treatment for your symptoms, they can suggest other ways to manage your menstrual pain, such as the use of heating pads and vitamin supplements. Regular exercise is recommended for everyone but may be especially helpful for reducing the symptoms of women who experience menstrual cramps.
Your Rexall Pharmacist will assess your situation and discuss the benefits and risks of available treatment options based on your personal circumstances. If deemed appropriate, your Rexall Pharmacist may prescribe an appropriate medication to meet your treatment needs. Dysmenorrhea is most often treated for a short time with pain medications called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and diclofenac. If you have any questions about your condition or your treatment, or feel that your medication may be causing side effects, don’t hesitate to ask your Rexall Pharmacist at any time.
