I always knew I wanted to pursue a career that focused on direct patient care. It is a very rewarding career as not only do we get the chance to help others, but we also get to challenge ourselves in very critical ways. Serving as a patient care advocate and promoting the well-being of others through my expertise is precisely why I decided to be a Pharmacist.

In Alberta, Pharmacists with the APA (Additional Prescribing Authorization) designation can write prescriptions based on assessment, for most medications except narcotic, controlled and targeted medications. Before the Pharmacist and patient agree that a prescription is an appropriate option, the patient must undergo an assessment. When conducting the assessment, the Pharmacist will require patient information including but not limited to patient medical history, medication history, allergies, and other information relevant to the patient and situation.
