MISSISSAUGA, Ontario - February 9, 2023 - As part of an ongoing commitment to keep our customers, employees, and communities safe, Rexall Pharmacy will be installing time delay narcotic-safe technology in all its pharmacy locations across Canada.

Rexall’s rollout of time delay safes supports the Ontario College of Pharmacists’ recent decision to mandate the use of this technology in community pharmacies across the province, and prominent signage highlighting their use.

“Over the last several years, pharmacies in Ontario and throughout Canada have seen an increase in narcotic and high-value medication thefts within our communities,” said Nicolas Caprio, President of Rexall Pharmacy. “The safety of our employees, customers, and our communities is our top priority and we’re taking proactive steps to enhance our security measures through the installation of time delay safes in our Rexall stores, not only in Ontario but in all of Canada.”

The use of time delay safes, along with signs and other public awareness efforts, has proven to be an effective deterrent in other jurisdictions such as British Columbia and Alberta, which have already mandated the technology within their community pharmacies.

A time delay safe, which requires a pharmacist’s code to open, has a digital timer that prevents access until a pre-set time has elapsed after the correct combination has been entered.

“We’ve seen a reduction in theft of up to 95% in our stores where time delay safes have been installed. We know this works well as a deterrent, and we’re confident that this investment into all Rexall Pharmacies will contribute to building safer and healthier communities in the provinces that we serve across Canada” said Caprio. This new measure will help Rexall to keep its customers, employees, and communities safe.
