FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
TORONTO, Feb. 2, 2018 – Commemorating World Cancer Day on Feb. 4, OneWalk to Conquer Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre announced a renewed partnership with title sponsor Rexall, encouraging the public to register for the 2018 event.
“We are grateful for this ongoing partnership between Rexall and The Princess Margaret, which will continue to draw thousands of like-minded individuals from across Canada to participate in OneWalk, Sept. 7 to 8,” Michael Burns, CEO and President of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, said.
“Rexall became the title sponsor of OneWalk in 2016 and continues to support the event’s success and long-standing impact. In 2017, Team Rexall raised more than $95,000 for The Princess Margaret, one of the top five cancer research centres in the world. Alongside Rexall, the OneWalk community is preparing for another life-changing journey throughout Toronto this summer, raising funds that allow The Princess Margaret to invest in transformational cancer research programs,” Burns added.
An estimated one in two Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetimes, and one in four will die from it. As global leaders, The Princess Margaret has the expertise to treat over 200 types of cancers, including the rarest forms of the disease. They have a rich history of research excellence, discovery and innovation. Every day, oncologists at The Princess Margaret combine clinical strength with the research expertise of The Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute to deliver breakthrough cancer research, treatments and patient-centred care.
“We are honoured to once again be the title sponsor for this year’s OneWalk because we believe in The Princess Margaret and the innovative treatment and care they provide,” Beth Newlands Campbell, President of Rexall Pharmacy Group Ltd, said.
“Whether it’s one of our patients or one of our own employees, the Rexall family has been touched by cancer. Rexall employees are eager to participate in OneWalk and we invite everyone to join us and walk together to help make a difference for Canadians,”Newlands Campbell added.
OneWalk organizers have also confirmed five route options for the 2018 event. On Sept. 7, participants may choose to walk in the new 15-Kilometre Night Walk throughout downtown Toronto. On Sept. 8, participants may also select to walk the 15-Kilometre Circuit, 25-Kilometre Classic or 40-Kilometre “Marathon.” Walkers hoping to conquer an even bigger challenge can sign up for the new Two–Day, Your Way option, completing both the Night Walk and any one of the additional route distances, for an up to 55-kilometre journey.
Irene Saffran, Pharmacist at Rexall, is participating in her second OneWalk this September, completing the 15-Kilometre Circuit.
“In February 2017, my colleague was diagnosed with incurable but treatable colon cancer. A few weeks later, I reconnected with another fellow pharmacist, where I learned that she was diagnosed with breast cancer and would soon begin treatment. In both of these instances, I felt compelled to make a difference and help my friends in any possible way,” Saffran said.
“My practice at Rexall connects me with many cancer patients undergoing treatment at The Princess Margaret and I am committed to helping them through my work. OneWalk continues to be my personal way of helping my two dear colleagues and countless other Canadians. With OneWalk, hope and optimism are at the forefront of every participant’s mindset. It’s empowering to have the opportunity to support world-leading doctors, scientists and researchers who make life better for those living with cancer. The fundraising and physical challenges that OneWalk provides are nothing compared to what patients experience and for that, I’ll keep on walking,” Saffran added.
