Choosing the Right First Aid Kit

An easily accessible and well-stocked first aid kit is essential to have all year round. At Rexall, we have ready-to-use basic first aid kits suitable for your car, home, cottage, boat, workplace, or any other place you find appropriate. We also offer first aid and safety supplies essential for a DIY first aid kit. When shopping for a first aid kit, there are three main types of kits to consider: a basic kit, a trauma kit, and an emergency kit.

A basic first aid kit includes essential items and supplies for treating minor injuries like cuts, scrapes, burns, and sprains. A trauma kit, also known as a bleeding kit, is useful for treating major, potentially life-threatening injuries that may require bleeding control. Its contents are crucial in maintaining an individual’s well-being until emergency responders arrive or they're transported to a hospital. Lastly, an emergency kit is typically kept at home and designed for unexpected events such as power outages and natural disasters. When assembling an emergency kit, you'll want to ensure you have enough supplies to sustain each person in your household for at least 3-5 days.

For the average person, having a basic first aid kit and an at-home emergency kit will prepare them for emergencies. However, for adventurers and backpackers, a trauma kit in addition to a basic first aid kit is essential.

First Aid Kit FAQs

  • A basic first aid kit should include the following supplies: adhesive bandages, antibiotic ointment, tweezers, scissors, disposable sterile gloves, sterile gauze pads, non-stick pads, triangular bandages, instant ice packs, adhesive tape, antiseptic wipes/wash, oral antihistamine, ibuprofen, and a naloxone kit.

  • A travel first aid kit should include all the essential supplies as a basic first aid kit as well as bug spray (refer to the previous FAQ for a full list of supplies). Also, you may want to look for travel-sized items, such as small scissors, to make it easier to pack and store your first aid supplies in your luggage.

  • A first aid kit should be handy in case of an emergency. Most people keep one in their bathroom medicine cabinet or in a kitchen cabinet (away from the stove area).

  • Your backpacking first aid kit should include all the same supplies as a basic first aid kit (refer to the list of basic first aid supplies above). However, depending on the location and physical activity level of your trip, you may want to consider packing a Trauma Kit. A Trauma Kit includes additional items like trauma shears, a tourniquet, survival or fire blanket, and a permanent marker.
