Diarrhea Relief

What causes diarrhea?

If you have loose or watery stool 3 or more times per day, you are likely experiencing diarrhea. Diarrhea, also referred to as the runs or loose stool, affects people of all ages and usually is not serious.

There are many potential causes of diarrhea, including bacterial or viral infections, certain medications, intestinal diseases or parasites, incomplete digestion of food, overactive thyroid gland, and even stress. At Rexall, our pharmacists can help you determine the potential cause of your diarrhea and provide guidance on diarrhea treatment.

Common Symptoms of Diarrhea

  • Loose and/or watery stool
  • Urgency to go to the bathroom
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal cramping or stomach pain
  • Nausea or lightheaded

Diarrhea Relief, Treatment, & Medicine

For most people, diarrhea will go away on its own within a few days and diarrhea medicine is not needed. If diarrhea persists for more than a few days, consult a Rexall Pharmacist or healthcare provider for advice. They may recommend one of two types of over-the-counter (OTC) diarrhea medicines or prescription drugs.

Loperamide

(e.g., Imodium)

Loperamide is an anti-diarrhea medication that slows down the movement of fluids and stool in the intestines. It is used for diarrhea treatment in individuals ages 6 and above and is available in tablet, capsule, and liquid forms.

Bismuth Subsalicylate

(e.g., Pepto-Bismol)

Bismuth subsalicylate works to improve fluid absorption, reduce inflammation in the intestines, and kill infectious bacteria. It can also relieve other symptoms such as heartburn, nausea, and indigestion. This diarrhea medicine is suitable for ages 12 and above and comes in liquid, tablet, chewable, and capsule forms.

Prescriptions & Antibiotics

(e.g., Alosetron, Eluxadoline, Rifaximin, Diphenoxylate, Atropine)

If over-the-counter diarrhea medicine isn't effective or you have chronic diarrhea, prescription drugs may be needed. Options include Diphenoxylate/Atropine for acute or chronic diarrhea, Alosetron and Eluxadoline for IBS-D, and Rifaximin for bacterial causes, including traveler's diarrhea.

Diarrhea Relief & Prevention Tips

Stay Hydrated

Drink at least 6 glasses of water a day and 1 cup for every episode of diarrhea to avoid dehydration.

Follow the BRAT diet

Opt for foods that help slow bowel movements, like bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast.

Take It Easy

When diarrhea strikes, avoid strenuous physical activities to save your strength and speed up recovery.

Practice Good Hygiene

Some causes of diarrhea are infectious so be sure to wash your hands regularly if you or someone around you has diarrhea.

Take Probiotics

Probiotics can prevent and treat diarrhea by aiding digestion and restoring gut balance.

When to Seek Medical Help for Diarrhea Treatment

When diarrhea strikes, you might debate whether to wait for it to pass or seek medical advice. If your child or infant has diarrhea, it's recommended to see a doctor to ensure there’s no serious complications, particularly from dehydration. For adults, seek medical help if diarrhea lasts longer than 48 hours, you have a fever of 38.5°C or higher, notice blood or pus in your stool, have severe abdominal pain or vomiting, or lose control of your bowels. Talk to a Rexall Pharmacist for guidance on diarrhea medicine and treatment.
