Get Relief From Arthritis Pain

There are approximately 100 different types of arthritis, each with its own set of symptoms. But there is one commonality that links them all together: joint and musculoskeletal pain. Some, like tendonitis, can be quite mild; others (like rheumatoid arthritis) can progress to severe stages.

Osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and affects approximately 1 in 10 Canadians. OA is caused by the breakdown of cartilage that normally acts to cushion the bones in your joints and develops gradually over time. With this wear-and-tear comes damage to the bones in the joint, and they begin to grow abnormally.

Symptoms.

  • A dull ache or pain inside the joint that worsens with exercise and is relieved by rest
  • Joint stiffness that occurs when the joint hasn’t been moved for some time that usually goes away with 30 minutes of movement
  • A grating noise when moving the joint (this is due to damaged cartilage rubbing together)
  • Affected joints may become enlarged
  • Pain or difficulty with movement-including everyday tasks like opening a jar
  • Stiffness can lead to freezing of the joint when it is bent

There is hope.

While Arthritis pain is different for everybody, there are steps you can take to help relieve and prevent arthritis pain, including exercising for strength and flexibility. Here are some other helpful tips:

  • Use the hydraulic lift on your office chair to make getting up and sitting down easier.
  • When you buy items in bulk, separate them into smaller bags or containers.
  • Look for kitchen tools that have a large, non-slip handle. Pots and pans, utensils, vegetable peelers, whisks and spatulas that are designed for easy and safe gripping are found in most kitchen supply stores.
  • Use looped straps for easy opening. Secure a looped strap through your refrigerator door and cupboard and drawer handles. You’ll get an easier grip that way and you can loop the strap through your forearm to help open a heavy fridge door.
  • Use raised seat cushions. Raised cushions will make sitting down and standing up from your living room, dining room and kitchen chairs easier.
  • Look for easy-to-open tops on medicine bottles.
