Beauty Class 101: Fantastic Looks For Fall
There’s no better way to get ready for school than with a mini-class. In this fun and informative tutorial, Rexall Beauty Expert Elysa Panzica teaches you how to quickly and affordably update your hair, makeup, teeth and nails, so you look amazing this autumn. Let the learning begin!
HAIR
The look: Straight bangs with tousled hair
Make it yours: The easiest way to update your locks for fall is to get a fringe. While you’re at the salon, have the rest of your hair snipped, too. “Cut off one to two inches to lighten things up and take off extra weight,” says Panzica. “A trim gets rid of split ends and removes any dullness or old colour from your hair.”
To achieve the Bohemian-chic look that’s hot this season, leave your bangs straight and give your tresses a soft, natural wave, she says. Work a product such as Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly Mousse through damp hair, then flip it over and scrunch it as you lightly blow-dry (use a defuser if you have one). Voila, you’re done!
MAKEUP
The look: A porcelain complexion with rosy lips
Next, pretty up your lips. As crimson is the coveted lip colour for fall, make your pout rosy with a lip stain. Try one from the CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain collection. These are perfect for school, because they provide natural colour and stay on practically all day. (You don’t have to reapply between classes!) To keep your lips soft, shiny and hydrated, put a coat of your favourite clear gloss on top. Then add colour to your cheeks. If your lip colour is rich and red-ish, choose a pink-ish blush; if your lip colour is pink, use a bronzer. (Bonus: Wearing bronzer helps make your teeth look whiter!) “Apply it on the apples of your cheeks, then sweep it up towards your temples,” she says.
Complete your fresh and beautiful look with an application of mascara - the only eye makeup you need. To give your lashes a beautiful boost, try Revlon Grow-Luscious mascara.
TEETH
The look: A bright smile that sparkles
TIP: If you’d rather skip whitening, makeover your smile with makeup. Pass on having a porcelain complexion and extend your summer tan with sunless tanners. (Click here for how to get a great tan from a bottle.) “A tan makes your teeth look so white,” she says. “As well, lip colours with berry, purple or mauve undertones make your teeth appear whiter.”
NAILS
The look: Manicured nails painted midnight blue
Make it yours: It only takes a moment or two to get gorgeous nails. To start, rub your hands and nails with Sally Hansen Manicure in a Minute for 60 seconds. “Use it on dry hands for something more abrasive or on wet hands for something gentler,” advises Panzica. “It makes your hands really soft and smooth; it gets rid of any small calluses and dead skin.” What’s more, the product buffs your nails with its tiny granules. Wash it off, then shape your nails with an emery board (use even strokes and file in one direction), if you wish, or move onto polishing.
If you like to be on-trend, then paint your nails with the season’s must-have hue: Very dark blue. “It almost looks black, but in the light it has a hint of colour,” she says. “It’s kind of a girlie twist on Goth.” You can layer on polish - a clear base coat, two to three coats of colour and a top clear coat - or opt to save time and money with an all-in-one varnish that requires only one coat, such as Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Blazing Blue. And that’s it - your nails are perfectly done!

Along with your books and iPod, keep a small beauty bag in your backpack. Stashing must-have supplies ensures you’ll never be caught in a beauty emergency. Here’s what to have on hand:
- Mini emery board To quickly smooth out sudden chips or breaks
- Rexall Facial Blotting Papers To get rid of shiny spots on your face - they absorb excess oil, so you can always have a matte complexion
- Rexall 24 No Metal Elastics To get a quick, spontaneous updo - they comfortably hold your hair in a ponytail or side braid
- Lip balm with SPF To keep your lips protected and moisturized throughout the day
