Oily And Blemish-prone Skin

What’s really going on?
Acne is often caused by abnormal skin sensitivity to reproductive hormones. Although the factors that influence hormonal activity vary between teenagers and adults, the subsequent formation of comedones (blackheads) and microcysts (whiteheads) is similar.

Shiny skin is not always an indicator, especially since excess sebum production results in extremely sensitive and irritable skin. Oily skin that is exposed to bacterial proliferation and already at risk of inflammation can easily become acne-prone.

Usually hyperseborrhoea (excessive sebum production) disappears spontaneously. But, for some people it can persist throughout life. Since sebum secretion is hormone-dependant, changes in androgenic hormones (sex hormones) during adolescence and pre-menopause can trigger hyperseborrhoea.

Factors that encourage excessive sebum production:

Heredity:

  • Predetermined genetic hypersensitivity of the sebaceous cells to androgenic hormones often results in hyperseborrhoea.

Inappropriate cosmetics:

  • Predetermined genetic hypersensitivity of the sebaceous cells to androgenic hormones often results in hyperseborrhoea.

Particular diseases or various hormonal disorders.

There are many effective dermatological treatments available. Adjunctive dermocosmetics can be used to purify the skin and reduce skin irritation due to certain medications.

Oily skin (hyperseborrhoea)

Under the influence of androgenic hormones, the sebaceous glands situated at the base of the hair follicle increase in volume and begin to secrete more sebum. This gives the skin a shiny or oily appearance. Consequently, makeup does not adhere well.

Characteristics:

  • Breakthrough shine
  • Excess sebum
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Predisposition to blackheads

The answer:
Oily skin is fragile and requires appropriate skin care products. Try non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic Eau Thermale Avène products that prevent sebum retention caused by occlusion, reduce shine and rebalance and purify the skin.

  • Avoid irritation that can lead to reactional seborrhhoea

Blemish-prone skin

Excess sebum can lead to dermatological infections such as blackheads, acne and seborrheic dermatitis. Oily, blemish-prone skin can develop into a pathological condition.

The accumulation of dead cells in the sebaceous canal obstructs the pores and prevents the skin from sloughing. The medical term for this stage is microcomedone. As the cells fill up, they grow in size and either open externally to become comedones (blackheads) or remain closed and form microcysts (whiteheads).
Characteristics:

  • Excess sebum
  • Blackheads
  • Some papules

Care for skin irritated and dehydrated by anti-acne treatments

Acne treatments containing isotretinoin decrease the size and sebum output of the sebaceous glands. It also stabilizes keratinization, makes the cells that are sloughed off into the sebaceous glands less sticky and inhibits the formation of comedones.

Characteristics:

  • Moderate to severe skin dryness
  • Inflammation
  • Intense skin exfoliation
  • Dry lips

The answer:
Use specific products in order to fight against the drying effects of these treatments on skin and lips.
